Institute is... Our Mission The mission of Grassroot Institute is to advance individual liberty, free enterprise, and responsible government. To accomplish that mission we explore, educate, and communicate. In other words, we network to build a base of liberty-loving individuals who will work toward our mission. GRIH provides public policy research in state budget and tax policies; health care, education, and welfare reform; and citizenship and governance. Background We are only slightly interested in the political left or right. When it comes to public policy we look to see where the policy sends the power. If it empowers the individual, then the policy moves society upward toward greater freedom and liberty. If it decreases individual authority, responsibility and accountability, handing power to the state, we think it sends us downward toward statism. Thus we are up or down evaluators rather than left or right. Needless to say, we do not like tyranny, whether it is from the left or the right. Activities The Institute hosts seminars, conferences, debates and forums to increase public awareness and participation in policy discussions. Results What makes the Grassroot Institute different from other policy organizations is our focus on RESULTS. Our research, publications and special events are conducted to make a positive impact in policy formulation in Hawaii.
Preserving freedom for the next generation • Guest speakers from throughout the United States and Pacific Rim bring their expertise and knowledge to bear on issues concerning our state. • The focus of the Institute demands that we build networks of individuals and organizations who are like-minded. To facilitate that, we foster and assist with running monthly meetings called Calabash in each county. The organization and development of other groups who share our goals is also a priority. • From major policy studies to issue briefs and editorials, the Institute publishes policy analysis aimed at promoting sound policy for the state of Hawaii. • In conjunction with Americans for Tax Reform, the Institute sponsors the Tax Pledge for Hawaii’s local and state leaders. This pledge to the People is intended to curb the tendency of politicians to raise taxes as a first option rather than reducing the size and cost of government. • Grassroot Institute maintains websites and a blog to keep the people of Hawaii informed about their government and the status of public education in our state. From time to time, we also create specialized websites or forums for discussion and education on pressing issues. • Every summer, GRIH sends interns to work with government and public policy organizations throughout the country. Youth participants learn valuable skills for future careers as civil servants, community leaders, or policy advocates. • The Institute conducts polls and surveys designed to inform public officials about how citizens view major policy issues. • Join us at our fifth annual dinner meeting. Last year, John Fund was the keynote speaker and winner of the Unsung Hero Award. Professor Randall W. Roth, coauthor of BrokenTrust, was awarded the George Washington Award. Join the Grassroot Institute and keep liberty alive in Hawaii! YOU are an essential partner in our quest to encourage sensible policies, preserve fundamental freedoms and promote market-based reforms. Grassroot Institute does not solicit or accept contributions from government sources. All of our research is funded by contributions from individuals, businesses and private foundations. 1314 South King Street, Suite 1163 |
