   Rep. Lyla Berg

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of

thinking we were at when we created them."

                                                                                                                              Albert Einstein

I have a vision of Hawaii as a place of healing, peace, and beauty where a renewed state of aloha spirit is exemplified and pervasive in every aspect of daily life. I envision Hawaii as a model of self-sufficiency and a leader in offering strategies and knowledge for sustainability.  I see Hawaii as an example of authentic collaboration in decision-making, mutual respect, and collective efforts toward maintaining balance between economic pursuits and a thriving, healthy natural environment.  The enfranchisement of Native Hawaiians is a reality with clarity about ceded lands, sovereign rights, and self-governance.

I have a vision of a renewed and vibrant representative government in Hawaii through the civic engagement of all citizens, the inclusion of youth, and by leadership of Native Hawaiians.  I envision a revitalization of the people’s roles in government and deliberate decisions made by those in public office based on the enlivened values and traditions of our host culture.  I see the heart of aloha restored in the manner with which people are treated and the way in which we prepare ourselves to participate in a civil society.

I have a vision of the restored civic mission of schools in our public education system with sustained, stable funding that inclusively and equitably serves all of our children. Through accountability, fair distribution of resources, integration of the arts, and the highest of expectations fulfilled, a system of education is available that meets the needs of our youth, communities, State, and the world.  I envision a framework of funding and services through public/private partnerships for early childhood education for children from birth to 5 years old, fueled by committed intention to the civic learning of youth. Community stewardship of schools is a reality with shared leadership and authentic participation by youth.

I have a vision of Hawaii as a self-sufficient, sustainable island economy with renewable energy sources replacing dependency on fossil fuels, diversified business integrated within a healthy, natural environment, and a renewed priority on agriculture as a primary industry.  I envision the public schools fulfilling their fiduciary responsibility to our youth by preparing them for those professions that support the ecosystems of the planet and foster lifestyles of collaboration, inclusiveness, and creativity.

I believe in the infinite potential of human beings and want to share a truly fulfilling life with others in developing this potential completely.  My vision is Hawaii as an example of what is possible when guiding principles and decisions are focused on the well-being of people, particularly the children, and grounded in the values and practices of our host culture.
