My vision for Hawaii is that things are looking better, but we have a long way to go. My opinion is incidental to the realities of the marketplace. Hawaii for the most part is a single-industry economy. That industry, mostly because of the blessings of nature, is tourism. The reason why we have a lack of economic diversity, high prices, and a lack of economic opportunity is in a word, government. Hawaii's one-party system for the past 40+ years has created an over-taxed, over-regulated, monopolistic economy. It is quite ironic that the company store that we owe our lives to now is "big government". Being an optimist, I see by deeds, things are looking better. The Executive branch of government led by Governor Linda Lingle is not a subscriber nor obligated to the status quo party of power in the past. More and more of Hawaii's people are seeing an alternative to "business as usual". Reform is being offered and seriously considered in education, economic policy and the myriad of other issues we deal with. If there was ever a time for business leaders, employees and consumers to stand up and fight for reform it is now. Hopefully, the people of Hawaii will have the courage to support those legislators and political leaders who are willing to take a stand for change. Now is the time. |
