VISION - TAPESTRY

No matter how Hawaii might change or modernize, I do hope that we retain the values that our forefathers brought to these shores. Our Oriental, Occidental and Polynesian ancestors brought with them a strong work ethic, a hunger to acquire education, a desire to nurture family, a deep love for the land, and respect for religion. Our earliest ancestors, the Hawaiians, gave us the aloha spirit. It would serve us well to retain and preserve these traditions and consciously teach them to our children.

We need to improve; we are not perfect. We must work for modern transportation systems on all islands. We need to improve our statewideschool system. It is necessary to make our governments more efficient. Believe in democracy and equal opportunity. And will we ever allow our businesses to grow and prosper?

But no matter what the future may bring, we must make an effort to remember the distinct threads of our immigrant cultures, and the beautiful tapestry that has been woven into a multicultural , yet American, society. The balance will always be threatened by internal and external forces. Nevertheless, work to keep Hawaii a wonderful place to live. Improve, modernize, work, study , surf - but retain in your hearts, the real beauty of Hawaii Nei.
