Standing Athwart Spending and Shouting “Stop!”

A Message from Dick Rowland

Dick Rowland

The last few years have not been kind to those who favor a financially restrained federal government. According to the Cato Institute, President George W. Bush “has presided over the largest overall increase in inflation-adjusted federal spending since Lyndon B. Johnson. Even after excluding spending on defense and homeland security, Bush is still the biggest-spending president in 30 years.” By way of comparison, Bill Clinton seems almost like a conservative--at least fiscally.

Of course, Bush isn’t the only one to blame. The Republicans in Congress have gone from being the Party of Small Government to the Party of Big Spending.

In an effort to stem the tide of runaway federal spending, the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, along with other like-minded groups and individuals, signed on to the following letter. Sent to every member of Congress, the letter calls for a new policy of financial prudence and restraint. Here’s hoping the Democratic Congress takes heed, and teaches the GOP a lesson in fiscal conservatism.

GRASSROOT PERSPECTIVE
26-Member Coalition Calls For Spending Restraint in Congress
June 6, 2007

Dear Member of Congress:

Elections have consequences, and election results have causes. One clear cause of the November election result was that the Democratic Party convinced large numbers of Americans that they would be more fiscally prudent than the Republicans had been. We the undersigned applaud their new stand, and stand ready to help.

Certainly the Congress under Republican leadership gave the voters plenty of reason to be receptive to Democratic overtures on spending. One simple example -- from 2001 through the 2006 Budget, the Republican-led Congress shamelessly raised its own spending by an average of 6.3 percent a year, more than twice the rate of inflation.

Abusing Hawaiian History: Hawaiians Knew Their History in 1959
by Erica Little and Todd Gaziano
(This piece originally was published by the Heritage Foundation as WebMemo 1117 on June 8, 2006. One year later, it is still a relevant and important read.---Dick Rowland)

The Senate is again considering the creation of a race-based government in Hawaii through passage of the misnamed “Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2005”[1] (S.147[2]). The bill is a terrible idea for many reasons, not the least of which is that it is flatly unconstitutional.[3] In addition to ignoring its grave constitutional defects, the bill’s proponents engage in a serious abuse of history to justify government-backed racial discrimination. Hawaiian history, in fact, rejects the idea of race-based rule. In 1959, Hawaiians voted overwhelmingly to approve statehood without “native” Hawaiian enclaves, showing by their numbers and their actions that they were all American citizens, the same as any other. In other words, regardless of what really happened in the 18th and 19th centuries, the people of Hawaii knew their history in 1959 and they did not want separatist enclaves in their future state. Thus, the creation of a sovereign, race-based government would contravene this political understanding.

(Note that the blog entry above, penned by our own Senior Fellow Jere Krischel on May 8, 2007, was picked up by the Heritage InsiderOnline. Jere writes, "The Akaka bill serves to divide rather than unite, abandons the civil rights granted to all people in the Hawaiian Kingdom, and mistakenly places native Hawaiians into a box that does not apply to them.")
