OHA Trustee Opposes Vote by Hawaii's People on Akaka Bill

By Richard Rowland

With regard to Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustee Colette Y. Machado's letter to the editor in The Honolulu Advertiser May 11, 2006, "Time to move on with federal recognition," it is difficult to see why she opposes a vote of Hawaii's people regarding approval of the Akaka Bill. In 1959, 94 percent + of Hawaii's voters approved the idea of Hawaii becoming the 50th state of the USA. Why would adding a government on top of or in the midst of our current government not call for a similar vote of the people of Hawaii? She says it has wide support. Thus, a vote should be welcomed.
