Grassroot Institute of Hawaii has three major goals with regard to the so-called Akaka Bill (S. 147; H 309). They are:
1. Education of the Hawaii public with regard to the Akaka bill. This includes debate, discussion and the beginnings of common understanding of what the end results would be should the bill pass. Government funded supporters of the bill have carefully avoided any discussion of consequences, preferring to address purposes.
2. Education of the US public and their elected representatives on the long-term precedents that would result for all states with the Akaka bill’s passage and implementation.
3. Demanding a vote of all the people of Hawaii before any establishment of a separate government in Hawaii could be put into effect. The current provisions of the bill actually impose such a government on Hawaii by national fiat which, to us, amounts to standing democracy on its head.
Thus, in the strict sense of the word, we are not against the Akaka bill. We are instead against a poorly informed public, perpetuated by government funding and the imposition of major legislation on a state without a vote of its people.
Hawaii by the way voted for statehood in 1959. The vote was 94% in favor. The Akaka bill is of at least equivalent importance to the state of Hawaii. With the above in mind, outlined below are major contributions to our education efforts. Let the sun shine in dark places. ~ ~ ~ Would you like to help? Our continuing education of the public throughout the nation about the provisions and implementation of the Akaka bill are continuing and entail ongoing expense. Your support is critical.
