Tax Me More Funds

Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) pushes hard for elected officials (and those running for office) to sign and abide by the Taxpayer Protection Pledge which prohibits new taxes.

We at GRIH support those efforts in Hawaii.

Now ATR is promoting the U.S. Treasury’s   “Gift to the United States” account. This is a voluntary contribution account which has been active since 1843. This is a wonderful idea for all those who are in favor of higher taxes. Even if a tax increase fails to pass, those dedicated to higher taxes are able to voluntarily pay the added taxes they support. Or, if they oppose a tax decrease which passes despite their objection, this account permits them to continue to pay the higher amount as they desired.

Six states have similar funds for lovers of higher state taxes. They are Arkansas, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Okalahoma and Virginia.

Such a fund in Hawaii, would for example, allow the public to ask all who supported the impending 2007 increase in the excise tax in Honolulu to begin paying that “wonderful” tax early. Would Mayor Hannemann be first in line?

We need legislation to provide for such a “Tax Me More Fund” to facilitate our finding out which higher tax proponents are sincere and which are not.

We might even design a form something like this:

To: State Tax Collector

From:

Dear Tax Collector,

______ I believe in paying higher taxes. Accordingly I am enclosing a check for _______ to cover the period _______.

____ I believe others should pay higher taxes, but should not.

____ I call for lower taxes across the board.

____ I authorize you to release this form to the public.

Just think, legislators who vote for high taxes would have a ready means of “putting their money where their mouth is” or not.

It could be one more ray of sunshine in the dark halls of political manipulation.

IN THE NEWS - HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTARIES

Grassroot Institute is regularly featured in news articles and broadcasts around the state. Here is a sample of some of our recent articles, research stories, and other articles of interest.

Still Blowing in the Wind

By Michael R. Fox Ph.D.

Grassroot Perspective - September 21, 2006

For more than 13 centuries mankind has been trying to capture the wind for energy production and other uses. In agrarian societies even into the 19th century such intermittent unpredictable energy was still useful for pumping water, grinding grain, and other forms of drudgery.  The history of energy development from those days is heading for more electrical energy use which is highly refined, highly controlled, and much more reliable.

Observations From Atlanta

By Don Newman

Grassroot Perspective-September 25, 2006

I attended the American Dream Coalition Conference in Atlanta Georgia last week and it will no doubt generate an endless number of op-eds in the future. It was an extremely interesting and informative conference centered around transportation and housing issues, for the most part. There were a number of workshops and lectures that sought to explore and illuminate these subjects and help determine what is the best way to address these areas.  Almost every city in the nation is facing these issues.

Stand and be Counted

By Richard O. Rowland

Grassroot Perspective-September 25, 2006

I saw in the newspaper that famous author and journalist Oriana Fallaci died. She was 77. I knew her briefly in 1968 in Vietnam. We were both residents at a press camp near Pleiku. She was the sole female of some 50 residents. There was no female toilet facility. Consequently, camp management had a system for clearing the six-hole “latrine” when Oriana wanted to use it. “Clear the latrine” and “Latrine all clear” would ring out over the loudspeaker from time to time.

Prosperity Sources (P.S.):

Those stellar optimistic risk-takers who are our entrepreneurs are what fuel our prosperity. The items below are offered to help those innovators.  We collect Prosperity Sources and hope our pickings help.

The National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) reminds us in a brief analysis (BA:571) that the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) enacted in 1978 was intended to tax the small number of wealthy individuals who, in any given year, legally owe no personal income tax due to the many exemptions allowed by the U.S. tax code. Congress passed a temporary increase in the exempt amount, but it will expire next year, forcing millions of middle-income citizens to pay a tax intended only for the super rich. This new NCPA Brief Analysis suggests that rather than creating another temporary fix, Congress should use this opportunity to permanently restructure the tax system.

A few observations:

-One of the most dedicated supporters of entrepreneur’s is Rich Karlgaard, Publisher of Forbes Magazine.

On June 19, 2006, he quoted his preacher’s insights into the entrepreneurial personality. “Some people are gifted at starting things. Sadly, we anal-retentive types are too quick to come along and criticize entrepreneurs for not finishing their projects. That’s wrong. The entrepreneurial gift isn’t to manage and administrator. It’s to start things.”

Then Rich illuminates the source. A nation of immigrants. “Do men and women who risk everything to leap into a new world differ temperamentally from those who stay home“.

“It would be surprising if they didn’t,” John D. Gartner, psychiatrist, said that. It gives us something to ponder and debate.

-On April 17, 2006, Rich Karlgaard ended his column with this: “Trade supports human creativity by liberating us to concentrate on our God-given talents. Trade ranks with freedom of speech and religion as an inalienable right.

What higher purpose is there than that!” Wow! Get busy!

Food For Thought

“It’s not the difference between people that’s the difficulty. It’s the indifference.”

-Author Unknown

Provided by Darci Evans

“Throughout history it has been the inaction of those who could have acted, the indifference of those who should have better, the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most, that has made it possible for evil to triumph.”

CRABGRASS

Weeds we’d like to pull…

On 9/21/06 US Attorney Pat Meehan filed a lawsuit in Philadelphia against the Transport Workers Union, Local 700 for failing to file annual disclosure forms for fiscal years 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005.

Meehan said “Labor unions have a clear obligation to comply fully with the reporting and disclosure requirements of the labor laws. We cannot have rogue unions who believe they are above the law.”
