The Foundation for Economic Education is holding a student essay contest on “The Law and Economic Freedom” and the deadline is approaching. FEE invites students to read The Law by Frederic Bastiat and address one or more of the questions below:
- Since an individual cannot lawfully use force against the person, liberty, or property of another individual, then the common force cannot lawfully be used to do it. Why not? Why does Bastiat refer to such a use of force as a perversion of force?
- Since the law organizes justice, why should it not also organize labor, education, and religion? What is the author's answer to this question?
- "Socialism confuses the distinction between government and society.” How, according to the author? Do you agree? Explain.
Please see other possible essay questions at the FEE web site. Students participating in speech and debate are invited to reference their current debate topic as well.
