MidWeek columnist and former Miss Texas Susan Page speaks with ATR President Grover Norquist at the recent GRIH luncheon.

As part of its 2008 Speaker Series, the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii recently featured Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) and author of the current bestselling book Leave Us Alone, at a special luncheon on October 17th at The Pearl Country Club. Norquist, who formed ATR at the request of President Ronald Reagan, is an astute observer of the political scene and what drives it. Norquist discussed his popular new book, the recent financial bailout in Washington, and the conflicting coalitions that are vying for dominance in our government.

"It's time for straight talk about taxes. Republicans tend to cut taxes. Democrats tend to raise them," said Norquist. "Voters tend not to appreciate higher taxes. Hence a great deal of smoke by politicians who want to raise taxes but also like to win elections. Obama says he'll cut taxes for most Americans. What he means is that he will send a $500 welfare check to 95 percent of the population and call it a tax cut," he explained. "This is half as big as the check George McGovern wanted to write to all Americans. But this is government spending, not a tax cut. It is time for a change….time for less government spending by Washington politicians!"

During the two-hour event, attendees enjoyed a three-entrée buffet lunch with a Question and Answer session following the speech. Afterward Norquist was on hand to sign copies of Leave Us Alone.
