Grassroot in China, Week 3: New allies and incentivizing reform

In a three-way conversation between China, Honolulu and Washington, D.C, Grassroot President Keli’i Akina and institute Policy Director Malia Hill talk with Thinktech Hawaii’s Jay Fidell about the work of China’s leading free market think tank.

Now formally a sister organization of Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, the Uni-rule Institute of Economics in Beijing has gained widespread respect in China’s government and educational establishment by producing solid research and proposals for economic reforms.

An important lesson Hawaii can learn from Uni-rule is how to bring about successful, incremental free market initiatives, regardless of political climate, by showing political leaders how specific and limited economic reforms are in their own best interest. This approach to incentivizing bite-size steps toward free market reform is one pathway to effective change in Hawaii.

Watch the entire interview to gain further insights on this intriguing approach that is working in China and has promise for any economy struggling with excessive top down governmental interference or control.
