Grassroot Institute Discusses Federal Recognition on Hawaii News Now

The news that the Department of the Interior has issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking regarding federal recognition of a Native Hawaiian government entity has re-energized the debate over the goals of the nation-building process. As one of the strongest and most consistent voices opposing the creation of a race-based government, the Grassroot Institute has appeared in multiple media outlets to explain why such an entity is both divisive and unconstitutional. Keli’i Akina, President of the Grassroot Institute, recently appeared on Hawaii News Now to discuss the problems with the drive to create Hawaiian nation. In the interview, Dr. Akina explains that, “The government cannot just create an Indian tribe. And Hawaiians were never an Indian tribe. We were citizens of all races in a constitutional monarchy.”
