In this ThinkTech video, Grassroot President Keli’i Akina speaks with Professor Gail Heriot, a legal scholar at San Diego University and a Commissioner of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Joined by Grassoot Policy Director Malia Hill, they explore the ever-evolving effort to create a Native Hawaiian governing entity, with special attention to the history of the Akaka Bill and how those same goals are seen now in the Native Hawaiian Roll and OHA’s nation-building efforts. Prof. Heriot also provides insight on the Constitutional issues involved, noting that the history of the Kingdom of Hawaii is incompatible with the race-based approach that dominates OHA’s efforts today.
