In this edition of E Hana Kakou, Grassroot President Keli’i Akina interviews Keali’i Makekau, a Native Hawaiian activist. During the conversation, they consider what it means to be Native Hawaiian and discuss whether state and federal agencies (like OHA and the Department of the Interior) should have a role in the formation of a Native Hawaiian government. The question of who benefits from the push for a Native Hawaiian “tribe” is explored along with the question of how to effectively promote Native Hawaiian advancement.
