If national security was really the most important benefit of the Jones Act — as opposed to protecting the maritime industry — then the best thing to do would be to focus on how to modernize the act and revitalize American maritime interests. Instead, the Jan. 17 response of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation was to propose more regulation.
