Oregon last month became the first state to adopt statewide mandatory rent control, which bars landlords from raising their rents more than 7 percent a year, plus inflation.

On Monday, Grassroot Institute of Hawaii President Keli‘i Akina spoke on the popular national radio show “The Lars Larson Show” about how the Oregon law will discourage homebuilding and, in turn, harm the very people the new law in intended to help: renters.

Akina told Larson and his three million listeners that if policymakers want to create more housing that is affordable, they should ease land-use restrictions, reduce regulatory burdens and let the free market work.
