Why Kenneth Malubay left Hawaii

“I was born and raised on Oahu. The primary reason for my leaving was the cost of living and living from paycheck to paycheck. I retired from my employment after 24-plus years and now have a pension to help with Social Security.

“I occasionally go back to Hawaii because I still have family there. I still believe Hawaii is a great place, but it’s easier to visit than to live there. I would go back if I could sell my residence (in Vancouver) and purchase a place with no mortgage that’s comparable to the home I’m in now.

“The biggest thing I miss is the food! Can’t find food like that on the mainland. Many restaurants have come close, but the real deal is in Hawaii.”
