National zoning expert M. Nolan Gray engaged with two audiences on Oahu on Wednesday, Feb. 15, about his view that zoning laws are the primary cause of America’s housing woes.
And on Thursday, Feb. 15, he shared his views with an enthusiastic audience on Maui.
Gray is a former New York City city planner who currently is research director for a housing advocacy group called California YIMBY and a doctoral student in urban planning at University of California, Los Angeles. He also is the author of the recently published book “Arbitrary Lines: How Zoning Broke the American City and How to Fix It,” which makes the case that zoning regulations can feasibly be abolished to build more affordable, prosperous and sustainable communities.
