Thousands of families have been leaving Hawaii every year in search of cheaper housing on the mainland, thanks to the state’s artificial scarcity of housing resulting from zoning and other restrictions on development. The Grassroot Institute is dedicated to making it easier to build affordable homes in the islands, so residents will want to stay here with their families.
There is movement at the Maui County Council to require that all of Maui’s so-called affordable housing to remain so in perpetuity.
