Leave A Legacy

Making a legacy gift is one way you can continue to provide support for prosperity and freedom in Hawaii. It allows you to support the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii’s mission while accommodating your own financial, philanthropic, and estate-planning goals.

Gift acceptance policy

The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii considers gifts from supporters to be investments toward the goal of achieving individual liberty, economic freedom and accountable government in Hawaii.

We view our donors as partners in the important work of informing and influencing Hawaii’s policymakers, news media and general public about key public policy issues.

Our mission and values are the sole guides for what we say and do, and where we apply the resources so generously provided to us by our partners.

The Institute welcomes direct contrbutions, but there are ways to support our mission with non-cash assets as well, often with significant tax benefits.

Ways to give

Including Grassroot in your legacy plans will help us strive for a better economy, better governance and a better society in Hawaii throughout and beyond your lifetime.

Some services require the Tax ID number of the institute and the date of entity. The Tax ID number is 99-0354937. The date of incorporation is February 1, 2001.

Appreciated stock

A contribution of appreciated stock eliminates capital gains taxes for you as a donor while helping the Institute continue to advance the principles we share through sound policy research.

For information on how to procure and transfer your gift of stock to the Institute, please contact Kevin Takamori at 808-864-1776 or ktakamori@grassrootinstitute.org.

From your IRA

Making a gift from your individual retirement account is especially convenient for our friends who are age 70½ or older and required to take minimum distributions.

To maximize the tax benefits, the funds must be transferred directly from your IRA to the Institute by your investment manager or account custodian. For those with check-writing privileges on their IRA accounts, this may be the most efficient way to make gifts directly.

Please consult your tax or financial advisor if you are considering a charitable IRA rollover to the Institute.

Through your will or trust

A legacy gift through your will or trust documents, whether a specific amount or a percentage of your estate, will ensure that the Institute continues as Hawaii’s most influential voice for market-based reforms long into the future.

The language used could be as simple as the following:

“I give, devise and bequeath to the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, a qualified section 501(c)(3) charitable organization, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, ___ percent of my residual estate [or a specific bequest of $________ or other specific personal or real property] to be used for its general charitable purposes.”

Since all forms of estate gifts raise tax and other issues, you should consult with an attorney concerning the preparation of your will or living trust.

As a beneficiary of your retirement accounts and life insurance policies

Listing the Institute as a beneficiary of your retirement accounts and life insurance policies will make it easy to support the Institute beyond your lifetime. It also will allow your heirs to avoid paying taxes on these assets.

This can be done easily by completing a beneficiary designation form with your account custodian listing Grassroot Institute of Hawaii (tax ID number 99-0354937) as the beneficiary for all or part of your account.
